Estancia La Maipu: This property is a working ranch (6000 heads of sheep), the shearing takes place every year around December. The Lodge is the original house of the estancia and the owners welcome guests to the house. One of the best kept museums in Patagonia is found here: the tiny house where Englishman J. Lively lived is a relict of Patagonia’s history.
Day 4: Lago San Martín - Bajo Grande.
Trek/ride climbs slowly but steadily through native-beech-tree forest, heading south-east from the Estancia at the shore of lake San Martín. Beautiful views of Lake San Martin, Cerro Astillado. Very good chances of seeing condors around the campsite.
Overnight at Grande Campsite - B/BL/D
Day 5: Paso del Gordo.
The climb continues to get to Paso del Gordo (1500 msnm), huge alpine meadows and high valleys unfold with unique wildlife. Follow Rio Portones as it meanders down. Arrive at the Guanacos campsite, this valley has a numerous population of guanacos, especially during summer as if offers very good grazing grounds for them.
Overnight at Valle de los Guanacos Campsite - B/BL/D
Day 6: Paso de los Guanacos.
Most of the day is spent following Portones River as it winds and descends down through meadows. There can be several river wadings today. The neighing of the Guanacos and the gallop of wild horses will join us during this day. We set up camp late afternoon on the shore of Portones River.
Overnight at Puesto Ivo Camp - B/BL/D
Day 7: Paso de la Gorra - El Chaltén.
Cross the Portones river and walk through forests and winding slopes. The reward is going to be well worth the effort: one of the best and least seen views of Mount Fitz Roy and its satellite peaks. If the sky is free of clouds the scenery will simply be a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Descent to El Chalten, through forest, bogs, and finally across the Rio de las Vueltas by means of a Tyrolean basket, or on horse-back (this river is too wide for us to wade).
Overnight at El Chalten, Los Cerros Hotel - B/BL/D
